From 1987 until May 1991 Irene was in private practice as a Counsellor, a position she established in the Central Otago Area. This involved:

  • Being a Guidance Counsellor at two Area Schools
  • Being a Counsellor for the Family Court, ACC and Social Welfare
  • Providing counselling and seminar presentations for staff who were made redundant
  • Consultancy work with groups, such as schools assisting them to work through difficulties with staff conflict, and doing staff analysis and development at a hospital
  • Providing group supervision sessions for local professional people and also Marriage Guidance Counsellors
  • Being a Marker of Post graduate papers from Massey University

She has also worked part-time as a:

  • High School Counsellor
  • Co-ordinator of the TAPS programme. This involved administration, tutoring and an advocacy role with people who were unemployed
  • Independent Counsellor for the Adult Adoption Information Act
  • Relieving teacher
  • Co-Ordinator of Community Education programmes
